Our Profile

Dance Theatre Xaymaca (DTX) was founded in 1995 under the directorship of Ms. Barbara McDaniel, BH (M).

One of the company’s most noteworthy successes is its annual staging of a Season of Dance since 1996.  At its inception, DTX was known worldwide as the only all-female dance company in Jamaica for many years.  However, in an ever-changing environment, DTX has had a number of guest Male Dancers.

It is DTX’s uniqueness and ability to portray all genres of dance, Jamaican folklore and dancehall in particular, that has given the company the opportunity to participate in many overseas tours as follows:

Under the auspices of the Jamaica Tourist Board

  • The World Festival of Island Cultures, Cheju Island, South Korea in 1998
  • The Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon, Georgia in 1999 and 2000
  • Boston in 2001

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Information Culture Youth & Sports

  • Surinam for Carifesta in 2003
  • Cuba in 2004

Under the auspices of the Embassy of Jamaica in Beijing

  • Festival of Jamaican Culture in Beijing, China in 2006
  • In December, 2011, DTX was invited to participate in a Christmas Pageant in Florida over a three (3) day period.

Over the years, DTX has been involved in some mind-blowing events such as:

  • Being commissioned for the movie Dancehall Queen, as well as the video for the film’s theme song by Chevelle Franklyn and Beenie Man in 1996.
  • The Opening Ceremony of the amazing crucial World Cup qualifying match between Mexico and Jamaica at the National Stadium in 1997.
  • The 2004 Caribbean Dance Celebrations in Florida.
  • “Lift Up Jamaica”, a joint musical production with the Ashe Performing Arts Company in 2012, which capitalized on the strengths of both companies creating an amazing production and the first joint effort of its kind for Jamaican theatre.
  • Benefit Performance in 2016 for Oniel Pryce, a member of the dance alumni who needed financial assistance for medical reasons.
  • The Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation on the Lawns of the Office of the Prime Minister in 2018.
  • Powerful Men and Women Perform for Charity Show in 2018.
  • Joint Seasons of Dance with its affiliate Wolmer’s Dance Troupe at the Little Theatre in 2018 and 2022.
  • ISSA School Boy Football Opening Ceremony 2022.
  • Annual participation in the Jamaica Dance Umbrella held at the Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Performing Arts.
  • Participation in numerous Miss Jamaica World Pageants, Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Pageants and JCDC Grand Gala Events.

DTX was also the 2025 Awardee for the Jamaica Dance Umbrella Festival.

While all these achievements are significantly meaningful to DTX, upholding its corporate social responsibility is equally important.  To this end, throughout the years DTX has made contributions to the Mustard Seed Communities in an effort to positively impact the lives of children with disabilities in Jamaica.

DTX continues to lift its bar of excellence as it meanders along the many twists and turns of the creative environment that it exists in and is ready and willing to respond to the desires of its audience.
